Four City Brewing Company in Orange
For the first time in 40 years, the proud tradition of brewing quality beer has found a place in Orange, New Jersey. Following the trail first blazed by the Winter Brothers’ Orange Brewery in 1901, the team at Four City Brewing Company is humbled to have recently marked their first anniversary as a craft brewery in the city. The seven-barrel brewery can produce 1,000 barrels per year.
The brewery name honors the four Oranges (West, East, South, and Orange) and the diversity that they embody. The three partners — Roger, Jeff, and Anthony — all have deep roots in the Oranges and a long mutual history of sharing favorite beers and brewing at home (the three are all musicians and collaborate on stage and in the studio as well as in the brewery).
The team has spent the last 10 years perfecting innovative and delicious recipes and while it’s satisfying to build a devoted fan base of beer geeks, it’s more thrilling for the team to welcome a newbie to the world of craft beer and to help make that world even more diverse.
A sample flight from Four City Brewing includes:
Citrus City (Pale Ale-American: 5.5% ABV) – Named for their hometown location of Orange, the pale ale is dry hopped with Citra, Simcoe, and Centennial hops.
The Miseducation of Loral Hops (IPA-American: 6% ABV) – A tribute to South Orange’s own Lauryn Hill, brewed with Citra and Loral Hops.
Hedison’s Phonograph Volume 2: Cashmere (IPA-Imperial/Double New England – 7.5% ABV) – West Orange’s own Thomas Edison inspired this rotating single hop series; the second drop features Cashmere hops (sweet melon and herbal aromas followed by a smooth bitterness). The turntable rotates every few weeks.
55 Sour Essex Avenue (Sour-Berliner Weisse: 5.5% ABV) – Made with white and two row wheat. Tart, with a crisp, dry finish.
Fourghettastoutit (Stout-American: 7.4% ABV) – A dark, roasty espresso stout. Brewed with local dark chocolate, maple syrup, and coffee. Opaque with a complex flavor.
Coming soon (just in time for Thanksgiving) is the Side Dish Sour, brewed with New Jersey cranberries.
