Morven Museum and Garden, 55 Stockton Street, is honoring Black History Month in February by hosting a student-led exhibition about Black soldiers who fought at the Battle of Princeton. It is presented in collaboration with Foundation Academies and the Princeton Battlefield Society.
The students’ research is the basis for “Men W/O Shoes: A Student-Led Tribute to Forgotten Heroes,” on display February 19-21.
At least 14 Black men fought alongside Gen. George Washington to secure a crucial victory in the Battle of Princeton. Students from Foundation Academies in Trenton have been engaged in research to uncover the identities of these men. The project, which grew from a collaboration with the Princeton Battlefield Society, culminates at Morven with an art installation of student-created works that reflect the resilience, sacrifice, and legacy of Black soldiers in war.
The exhibition will be open for the public to visit, free of charge, in Morven’s Stockton Education Center on Thursday, February 19, from 5 to 7 p.m., and on Saturday, February 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During these times, students and educators will be on hand to answer questions. Registration in advance is not necessary to view the exhibition at these dates and times in the Stockton Education Center.
Tickets to visit the main house at Morven are available to purchase online or in the Museum Shop on the day of your visit.
