Roebling Museum Reopens with Town Walking Tours
The unique Roebling Museum reopens on Saturday, March 1 after a few months of planning events and exhibits that explore the unusual history of company town of Roebling.
The museum, at 100 2nd Avenue, Roebling, will be open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. through the end of December. All visits to Roebling Museum include an introductory film, more than five galleries of exhibits, an interactive Q&A with volunteer tour guides, and access to a seven-acre historic landscape which is dotted with industrial equipment once used to build America’s most iconic bridges, including the Brooklyn Bridge.
The company town walking tours run from 1 to 2 p.m. The guided tours offer information about the workers, from immigrant laborers to wealthy superintendents. The cost is $5 for the tour, and $3 when purchased with museum admission. Tickets are for sale at the admission desk.
The Roebling Museum tells the story of the company town built by John A. Roebling’s Sons Company, which was involved in some of the most important technological achievements of the industrial age. Beyond bridges, there were telegraphs and telephones, electrification, deep mines, ships, elevators, and airplanes that were built or partly built in Roebling. An intersection of diverse cultures in this community changed the cultural and industrial landscape of New Jersey.
As a former gateway to a sprawling steel mill, the Roebling Museum was the passage point for thousands of workers who brought to life John A. Roebling’s innovative engineering ideas. His sons Washington, Ferdinand, and Charles built the company into the world’s leading producer of wire rope with four factories, and nearly 8,000 employees at its peak.
Admission is free for members and children under 10; $7 for those age 18 and older; $6 for seniors age62 and older, active military and students age 11 and up; and $2 for SNAP EBT card holders from any state, up to four people.
