Visit Howell Living History Farm on Saturday, February 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to learn all about the art of maple sugaring and see exactly how it’s done. Hundreds of sugar maple trees line the banks of Moore’s Creek and the nearby by woods at the foot of Baldpate Mountain on Howell Farm’s property.

Historically, farmers in New Jersey began the annual work of sap collection and maple syrup production in February. During the mid-19th century, farmers began to use metal spikes, buckets, and tanks to collect and store the syrup.

The first step takes place in the sugar bush and demonstrations will occur every 30 minutes between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors will observe Howell’s expert tree tappers and see how the syrup goes from inside of a tree to the top of a stack of pancakes!
