Stuart Student Named Regeneron Science Talent Scholar
Congratulations to Stuart Country Day School’s Sonya Jin ‘22 who was recognized as a Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholar. The #RegeneronSTS provides students a national stage to present original research and celebrates the hard work and novel discoveries of young scientists who are bringing a fresh perspective to significant global challenges. The 300 scholars and their schools will be awarded $2,000 each.
The #RegeneronSTS scholars were selected from 1,805 applications received from 603 high schools across 46 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, and eight other countries and will join a distinguished group of alumni that includes Nobel Prize winners, MacArthur Fellows, entrepreneurs, and innovators. Scholars were chosen based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking, and promise as scientists and hail from 185 American and international high schools and homeschools in 37 states, China, Switzerland, and Singapore.
To enter this competition, Sonya submitted original research on automating pneumonia and COVID-19 diagnoses with machine learning and X-rays called “PneumoStack: A Novel Approach to Automated Pneumonia Diagnosis with Deep Transfer Ensemble Learning via Convolutional Neural Networks and Stacked Generalization.”
She will continue her work in hastening a future with automated medical diagnoses, hoping to launch a biotech startup in this field in the future.
The top 40 finalists will be announced January 21. https://bit.ly/3pTAVKm
